Stanley and Livingstone

Corre el año 1870. El periodista del New York Herald Henry M. Stanley (Spencer Tracy) acaba de volver de una peligrosa misión entre los indios en Wyoming "You can't arrest me, colonel. I know my rights", le dice a un militar que amaga con encerrarlo por negarse a revelar lo que acaba de encontrar. "My paper sent me to get a story and I got it. All of this is the exclusive property of our boss. James Bennett."

De vuelta en la redacción, Bennett (Henry Hull) escucha pacientemente a un grupo de políticos que quiere comprar el diario pero rechaza su oferta con un discurso que subraya el pasaje del diario político al comercial. "For your information senator, I intend to go on telling the truth about graft and corruption in high places. More prominent the rascal, the bigger the news", les dice. El senador que vino a visitarlo insiste: "And now if you would let us know your lowest price of the Herald", pregunta. "One-cent daily and 5 cents on Sundays", es la respuesta.

Acto seguido tiene lugar el regreso triunfal de Stanley, aunque su jefe de inmediato se preocupa por el tema de los gastos. "You happen to have a man Sloke still in your expense account", le dice Bennett, sobre el fixer que se llevó a territorio indio. "He took care of me like a baby there. I promised him a trip to New York", responde el periodista. La idea del dueño del diario es enviarlo a Africa para probar que el explorador británico David Livingstone está vivo, contrariamente a lo que se cree hasta el momento, lo cual da pie al resto de las aventuras del film.

Cabe destacar que la expedición de Stanley a cargo del New York Herald efectivamente existió. "You think it will make a great story? I mean finding Livingstone", pregunta Stanley. "The greatest story in the history of journalism. If you get it," responde el jefe. "I will go."
